गौचर मेला भारत-तिब्बत के बीच व्यापार का गवाह है, जिसे अब नमो मंत्र से राष्ट्रीय पहचान मिलेगी। वर्ष 1943 से गौचर मेला शुरू हुआ था। हर वर्ष 14 नवंबर से सात दिन तक मेले की धूम रहती है।14 नवंबर से राजकीय औद्योगिक विकास एवं सांस्कृतिक मेला शुरू हो जाएगा। सात दिनों तक चलने वाले इस मेले में हर रोज कई आयोजन होते हैं। अपर गढ़वाल के सबसे बड़े मेलों में शामिल इस मेले की राज्य स्तर पर विशेष पहचान है। बीते नौ नवंबर को प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की एक जिला एक मेले की बात से इस मेले को अब राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर भी पहचान मिलेगी।
वर्ष 1943 में भोटिया जनजाति एवं अन्य लोगों की पहल पर यह मेला शुरू हुआ। जिसका शुभारंभ तत्कालीन गढ़वाल कमिश्नर बरनेडी ने किया। तब यहां भारत तिब्बत व्यापार इस मेले के माध्यम किया जाता था। बाद में धीरे-धीरे औद्योगिक विकास मेले एवं सांस्कृतिक मेले का स्वरूप धारण कर लिया। अब मेले में मूल अवधारणा व्यापार को शामिल करते हुए नए आयोजन को शामिल कर दिया गया है। चमोली जिले के व्यापार संघ के जिला महामंत्री सुनील पंवार कहते हैं कि गौचर मेले की अपनी राज्य स्तर की पहचान है। जिसे देखते हुए सरकार ने इसे राजकीय मेला घोषित किया है।
