चम्पावत उपचुनाव का परिणाम कांग्रेस को लंबे समय तक याद रहेगा। मुख्यमंत्री का चेहरा सामने होने पर उसकी जीत तो शुरू से दूर थी। लेकिन हाल इतना बुरा होगा। इसका अंदाजा किसी को नहीं था।
पिछले चुनाव में कांग्रेस को इस सीट पर 27243 वोट मिले थे। तब हेमेश खर्कवाल उम्मीदवार थे। लेकिन उपचुनाव में महज 3233 मत मिले। यानी कांग्रेस अपने 24 हजार वोट भी गंवा बैठी। ऐसे में कांग्रेस के प्रदेश से लेकर राष्ट्रीय नेतृत्व को मंथन करने की जरूरत है। कांग्रेस लगातार चुनावी बाजी हार रही है।
उत्तराखंड गठन के बाद से चम्पावत में हर चुनाव में जनता ने अपना विधायक बदला है। लेकिन 2017 में यहां से जीतने वाले भाजपा के कैलाश गहतोड़ी ने 2022 में इस मिथक को तोड़ दिया था। इसके बाद उन्होंने सीएम के लिए विधायक के पद से इस्तीफा दे दिया।
गहतोड़ी के इस्तीफे के बाद से साफ हो गया कि सीएम की सीट अब चम्पावत होगी। जबकि इससे पहले एक दर्जन से अधिक विधायक सीट खाली करने को तैयार थे। पहले चर्चा थी कि कांग्रेस अपने पुराने नेता व दो बार इस सीट से विधायक बने हेमेश खर्कवाल को मैदान में उतारेगी। खर्कवालऔर लेकिन आपसी सहमति के बाद निर्मला गहतोड़ी को टिकट दिया गया।
चुनाव आयोग उत्तराखंड की वेबसाइट के मुताबिक पिछले चुनाव में भाजपा को 32547, कांग्रेस को 27243, आप को 2557, बसपा 506 और सपा को 211 वोट मिले थे। जबकि दो निर्दलीय जगदीश भट्ट को 465 व दीपक बेलवाल को 280 मत हासिल हुए।
उत्तर प्रदेश की राजनीति में प्रभाव रखने वाली सपा और बसपा पड़ोसी राज्य की इस विधानसभा सीट पर नोटा से भी पिछड़े नजर आए। बेहद खराब प्रदर्शन और वर्तमान में सीएम के चुनाव लडऩे की वजह से बसपा तो मैदान में उतरी ही नहीं।
